TULLAHOMA, Tenn., July 13, 2026 — Ascend Federal Credit Union, the largest credit union in Middle Tennessee, kicked off its 75th anniversary with a commemorative ribbon cutting ceremony at its Tullahoma headquarters on July 10, in partnership with the Tullahoma Area Chamber of Commerce.
Founded in 1951 on Arnold Air Force Base in Tullahoma, Ascend began with just eight members working out of the Benefits Office at Arnold Research Organization. What began as a small, on-base financial resource for military personnel has grown into the largest credit union in Middle Tennessee.
"Ascend was founded on the principle of people helping people," said Ascend President and CEO Matt Jernigan. "As we celebrate 75 years, we are deeply grateful for the trust our members have placed in us across generations. That trust has been the foundation for our growth, and it inspires us to keep showing up for our members and communities with the same care, purpose, and commitment that have defined Ascend since 1951."
As part of the 75th anniversary, Ascend is highlighting its members and their stories, showcasing the credit union's long-standing commitment to helping people achieve their financial goals and build stronger futures.
"I think what makes Ascend feel different is the community aspect of it. It doesn't feel like a transactional business environment. It feels more like a community," said Emily McAnally, Ascend member. "That's what sets it apart for me when I'm looking at Ascend compared to other banking options."
Over the past 75 years, Ascend has remained committed to supporting members at every stage of their financial journey. Members benefit from free financial health checkups, financial education workshops, credit monitoring, extended business hours, personalized guidance, and more.
"We signed up for a free online retirement workshop with Ascend, and it couldn't have come at a better time in our life," said Laurie Hancock, Ascend member. "They're always thinking ahead, helping us plan for the next stage of life."
"I've got a baby on the way and am a small business owner," said Jason Glaskox, Ascend member. "Ascend has really helped me, whether through the checking account for everyday business operations, or through savings to help create a foundation for my future family."
Ascend's commitment to community is equally strong, with investments in seven key focus areas — education and financial literacy, the fight against hunger, the well-being of children, supporting diverse communities, veteran care and support, the environment and natural resources, and mental and physical health. In 2025 alone, the credit union invested $1.2 million back into Middle Tennessee through monetary gifts and in-kind donations.
