The Q2 2026 Performance Index Top 100 is not a list of the biggest credit unions. CU Wire's Performance Index ranks eligible credit unions across capital, asset quality, earnings, liquidity, growth and stability. Credit unions of every asset size can qualify when they meet the data-integrity screens.

The list is not pay-to-play. Placement is not sponsored, purchased, nomination-based or tied to a CU Wire Data subscription. Credit unions appear because their reported data clears the methodology; many institutions on the list may not know they are included until after publication.

Based on NCUA Call Report data, the top 10 institutions range from $11.6 million to $1.89 billion in assets. The full Top 100 ranges from $4.5 million to $10.7 billion. Within the Top 100, 62 are below $500 million in assets, and 26 are below $100 million.

The index uses current NCUA 5300 Call Report fields for Q2 2026. Growth is same-quarter year-over-year against Q2 2025; stability uses recent filing history. Eligibility requires a current healthy filing, positive ROA, at least 500 members and reasonable assets per member. The score is not a letter grade, not an NCUA CAMELS rating, not a prediction and not a consumer recommendation.

How the index works

The Performance Index is intentionally hard to max out. The methodology compares institutions inside narrower asset-peer context, treats liquidity as an adequacy band instead of a bigger-is-always-better ratio, checks whether asset quality is supported by meaningful lending activity, and gives earnings more credit when they come from core operations. Capital still matters, but unused capital does not automatically carry the ranking.

The top of the table landed in the high 80s. A mid-80s score is not a B grade; under this methodology, it signals a strong operating profile across measures that often work against one another.

What the leaders have in common

Using those reported fields, the top ten averaged an 87.0 Index Score, 1.77% ROA, a 15.34% net worth ratio, 0.20% delinquency and 0.23% net charge-offs. Average year-over-year growth was 8.60% in assets, 8.06% in loans, 7.63% in shares and 2.84% in members.

Within the same reported data, the group spans seven states: Minnesota, Oregon, and Texas have two each and California, Illinois, Montana, and Virginia have one each. It includes four credit unions below $500 million in assets, and two below $100 million. In the top 25, six credit unions were below $100 million. The highest-ranked sub-$10 million credit union in the recognition set was Erie City Employees Credit Union at No. 86, with an 81.7 Index Score.

Why this list is different

A size-only ranking can miss operating quality. The Performance Index still rewards strong capital, clean credit, earnings power and growth, but it checks those signals against liquidity, lending depth and concentration. The top credit unions did not all win the same way; their metrics held together across the full operating profile.
